(Columbus, Ohio) – The Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) Knox Campus renovation of Ariel Hall, designed by Cincinnati-based architecture firm SHP Leading Design, is complete. Ariel Hall re-opened for student use at the start of COTC’s Winter Quarter on January 3, 2012.
Ariel Hall‘s existing structure was not properly equipped to meet the needs of COTC’s expanding 21st century student population. SHP Leading Design was challenged to create more usable space within the existing footprint, while updating both the interior and exterior and integrating technology and flexibility into the learning environment. The new facility includes classrooms, labs and administrative offices, which have been completely renovated to the highest standards of 21st century education.
“As architects, we felt a responsibility to imprint COTC’s brand into the building, but have it remain contextual to the community in which it resides,” said Andrew Maletz, AIA, Vice President, SHP Leading Design. “The design itself is technical in nature and we worked to wrap technology into every aspect of the structure.”
Through the use of Building Information Technology (BIM) SHP was able to reconfigure the existing functional space from 32,000 to 36,000 square feet. State of the art, flexible classrooms incorporate technology at the highest level, allowing teachers and students to connect, share and learn. This includes the incorporation of smart boards, video technology and modular furniture to allow for a variety of learning settings. In addition, the Ariel Hall renovation was planned with sustainability in mind at every stage. The new structure is seeking LEED Silver certification and is the first COTC building to do so.
“With the help of SHP Leading Design, we were able to completely transform the interior and exterior of Ariel Hall to create a learning environment that not only meets and exceeds our students’ needs, but also embodies what COTC represents,” said Brian Romer, Director of Facilities Planning & Operations, COTC. “Our students and faculty alike will be able to utilize Ariel Hall far into the future.”
The renovation of Ariel Hall began in June of 2010 and was completed in November of 2011. Nearly 1,000 students and faculty will begin using the facility at the start of Winter Quarter. Ariel Hall is located at 236 South Main Street in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
