Sands Montessori Achieves LEED Gold Certification

(Cincinnati, OH) – SHP Leading Design is pleased to announce that Sands Montessori School in the Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) was awarded LEED Gold Certification. LEED is the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings.

LEED verifies environmental performance, occupant health and financial return. LEED was established for market leaders to design & construct buildings that protect and save precious resources while also making good economic sense.

“The new Sands Montessori School was a very exciting project for SHP,” Charlie Jahnigen, SHP Vice President said.  “It’s an outstanding example of our firm’s commitment to designing sustainable, energy efficient buildings for our clients.”

Nestled amongst the trees on a residential street, the new school was constructed on the existing school site and part of the bustling Mt. Washington neighborhood in Cincinnati.   The rooflines and material colors all fit within the context of the Sands Montessori community. Two outdoor learning centers take advantage of the wooded site and blend with the natural setting.

To align with district goals, it was important that the new school be energy efficient. The building reduces energy loads for heating, cooling, lighting and water heating through the use of high efficiency lighting and HVAC equipment, daylighting and white roofs.  In addition, roof monitors provide daylight to the second floor extended learning area and gymnasium and classrooms boast sloped ceilings.

It was also a goal to select very durable, yet sustainable, materials that could last over 50 years on a school building. Over 23% of the materials are made from recycled content and 40% of the materials are from within 500 miles of site.

“Careful consideration was also taken during construction, “ Jahnigen added.  “A remarkable 81% of construction waste was recycled which diverted 8,926 tons of waste from the landfill.”

The new school is viewed as an overwhelming success and is regularly celebrated both locally and nationally with awards, press and recognition.  Since the building’s opening, school enrollment has grown by nearly 10%.
