Talawanda High Schools Earns LEED Gold Certification

(Cincinnati, Ohio) – SHP Leading Design is pleased to announce that Talawanda High School in the Talawanda City School District has been certified LEED gold.  LEED is the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) rating system for sustainable building design and construction.

“The new 187,000 square foot Talawanda High School is the first LEED certified school for the district,” SHP Vice President Charlie Jahnigen, AIA, LEED AP, said.  “The traditional design was influenced by the close proximity to and the historic Georgian style of Miami University, which is just blocks away.”

LEED is a comprehensive rating system that focuses on multiple attributes of sustainable design including energy and water efficiency, sustainable site development, material selection and indoor environmental quality. LEED was established for market leaders to design & construct buildings that protect and save precious resources while also making good economic sense.

“The building reflects what’s important to the school district,” Jahnigen added.  “We integrated sustainable design strategies that had real, positive effects on the school.”

Sustainable features include orienting the academic corridor north and south and a sloped acoustic ceiling grid reflecting light into the classrooms.  Displacement ventilation under raised access flooring eliminated extra ductwork for each classroom.  A geothermal HVAC system with 320 wells helps optimize the energy efficiency of the building as well.

The statistics for the new school are also very impressive.  Over 36% of the materials were regional and 26.37% were made from recycled material. Savings compared to baselines standards include 45.7% energy savings and 33% reduction in water usage. In addition, 90% of regular occupied spaces have direct line of sight views. The project diverted 761.21 tons of waste from the landfill as well.

“To date, Talawanda is the 24th school in Ohio to achieve LEED gold certification and only the second in Butler County,” Jahnigen concluded.
